Medical Billing Options for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Services
Please check our Forms page for necessary referral, registration and patient intake forms.
Medicare: Medical Nutrition Therapy is covered under part B for patients referred by a physician who have diabetes or pre-dialysis renal disease. During the first year of diagnosis, patients are covered for 3 hours of MNT; 2 hours in each subsequent calendar year. Additional hours can be considered medically necessary. The treating physician must complete a referral for Medical Nutrition Therapy in order for insurance to be billed.
Private Insurances: In the state of California, registered dietitians are considered out of network providers. Depending on the insurance carrier, coverage varies from 50-70% of allowable billed amount once yearly deductible has been met. SB Nutrition will bill services that include the diagnosis of diabetes or pre-dialysis kidney disease only. Unfortunately, 90% of insurances do not provide MNT for other specialized diagnoses (such as: obesity, hypertension, prediabetes). The treating physician must complete a referral for MNT in order for insurance to be billed. MNT benefits will be checked to determine eligibility and if yearly deductible has been met. If deductible has been met, a flat $50.00 co-insurance payment will be collected. If deductible has not been met, patient must pay for consultation at time of visit.
Fee for Service: A cash option is available for patients wishing to receive nutritional services but do not have medical nutrition therapy as a covered benefit.
